Problems with my bettas (2 pics)

First, Erick is changing colours, which is a bit weird. Or is that normal? The black is spreading and he's getting metallic sea green stripes as seen in pic below.

Second, Mr Melinko's tail has many splits from a fight at the pet shop, and some of the splits go straight to his fin base, what can I do to help him heal besides frequent water changes? Should I add salt or something?

Thanks all in advance! More pics of Erick are Here and more pics of Mr Melinko are Here

GH: no test kit for this test
KH:no test kit for this test
      Ammonia: 0ppm

      Size: 27ltr

How long has it been set-up? 2 years
When was the last new fish added? 31/03/07 (when I got him)
Is there a heater in the tank? yes
Symptoms / Problem description: nibbled fins - some with white tip though not fluffy, got stuck to the filter the other day then just swam off on his own like he was just leaning on it, but has been fine for last 2 days and filter is very weak, also has colour change, was all pale pink with black scales when I got him. Nibbled fins are from panda corys that lived with him til I caught them nibbling his fins while he was sleeping (in all fairness I was feeding them worms that are the same colour, but they've been moved)
Action taken (if any): more water changes, plants around the filter to block easy fish access
      Medications used (if any): none

I don't know about bettas, but when my fish get split fins, I put in Melafix, which is a kind of medicine for lots of things. I just did it the other day for my rhino pleco who had inexplicable split fins, and they're healed already.
-nods- Will have to give it a go if things don't look up with just water changes and good food :) thanks so much!
Good luck. And by the way, I think Erick is very beautiful. I showed him to my mom and she thought so too. :)
aww thankies -hug- I thought he was to cute to live his life in a forgotten fish shop tank. Poor thing :) He's right by my bed now so I see him a lot and he seems to love it, follows me about as I go around doing things here and there (not a flared "I'm gonna getcha" follow, just a curious "watcha doin now? Can I help?" sort of way lol)
Aww, that's so cute. That's what my oldest parrot cichlid does. She is always swimming at the end of the tank closest to me and watching me, so I wave to her. I don't see why no one else wanted Erick. He's neat! And so different from other bettas. That's why I like him.
That's why I like him too :P But then again I have Wonkey and Lumpy, and no one wanted them lol!

Wonkey:
Lumpy:
They should both look like this lol: http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/image.php?image_id=3449 :)
Awww, I think they're cute. It's very nice of you to take the fish no one wants.

I have a kind of funny-looking fish myself. My younger parrot cichlid has a funny mouth that gapes, not a cute smile like the other one. She's (or he's) at the bottom: http://anann73.livejournal.com/82891.html
aww how cute! I wonder if he tried to eat something he shouldn't have. My oscar bit the bichir once, who shook him off, and his mouth was stuck open for a few days lol, they've been best mates sinse though :P

I love odd and weird fish :D I have all the fish shops looking out for them :D
I don't know. It seems her (I just call her her, but I don't actually know) right nostril is a little bigger than the other, so maybe she's just not as pretty as others. Which isn't her fault, and I don't mind. She's cute.

That's good! I hope they have your number so they can call you. ;)
she's still cute :)

my home and mobile number, sadly :P
I know. ;)

Hehe. Well, I have the local fish store's number programed into my cell, and when I call them all I have to say is my name and they know who it is. :D
LOL!

They know my by voice and fish list LMAO! I'm so sad and addicted :P
Well, it is addictive. I never intended to become a fish hobbyist, but here I am. I can't help it. :)
Well, for our first an. I got my husband the hex Erick is now in, and less then 2 years later, I have over 34 tanks and he just has a 4 foot that I got him for christmas following our an. as an upgrade :P
O_o 34???? How do you maintain them all??? Wow, I feel so lame. I only have one 55-gallon tank with six fish in it.
with effort lol. I do a few tank changes a day, there all in one room and well labled so feeding is almost mechanical, but does take a lot out of you sometimes. Def a full time gig some days lol!

we all have to start somewhere :)
Oh my. I don't think I will ever go that far. One $300 tank is enough for me, although when I get married and move I think I'll try to get a blue lobster for the old 20-gallon tank my fish used to be in when there were less and they were smaller. I don't trust one in the fish tank anymore because the one I had possibly murdered some of the fish.
I think I spent under £400 or so to be honest. Freecycle rocks :)
Surely it's added up with all the fish, eqipment, food, etc. There's no telling overall how much I've spent, especially since a couple of months ago I was having trouble and lost several fish.
yeah, thats mostly tanks. Just my FX5s were £200 or so, and I spent over £100 or so in fish in the last two months lol
All I have to say is... holy cow! ;)
yeah, I need to start keeping track lol!
Or find a cheaper hobby, lol. ;)
yeah.. I just made the mistake of adding up the costs of everything.. well.... pricy........
I'm definitely not going to do that. :)
